Doreen Melton Scholarship
- In 1973, the Edmonton Diocesan Council of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada established a “Family Life” scholarship with the funds remaining from hosting the National Convention in Edmonton that year. Initially, the scholarship, paid out from interest earned on the invested principal, was awarded to a student taking a family life course at a Catholic university or college. In 1978, Mrs. Doreen Melton died. Mrs. Melton was a long-standing CWL member who had done much to establish the League at the parish level in the Archdiocese of Edmonton. The scholarship was renamed in her honour to become the “Doreen Melton Scholarship”. Because of Mrs. Melton’s interest in promoting vocations to the priesthood, it was decided that an annual scholarship of $500 would be awarded to a seminarian studying at St. Joseph Seminary for the Archdiocese of Edmonton. Each year, the scholarship recipient is selected by the Rector of St. Joseph Seminary in Edmonton. The Scholarship recipient is invited to the annual Diocesan Convention where the scholarship is presented.
- Donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund which, as of 2016, is held in trust with the Foundation of St. Joseph Seminary and Newman Theological College. Tax receipts will be issued.
